Fake Russian Vodka Scare

Tuesday October 31, 2006
A particular batch of bootlegged vodka from Russia has reached the masses this week and poisoned hundreds of people. The reports vary but some kind of methylated spirit, furniture polish or disinfectant was used in this illegally produced vodka to increase the alcohol content. In the Pskov region of Russia over 400 people have been hospitalized and 15 died as a result of drinking the tainted spirit that has also made it’s way across the border to Latvia where 59 people have become ill so far.

This is not a new development as bootleggers often cut liquor with harmful substances. The current Russian scare, however, is significant because of the scale of the harm done. In the rural areas many cannot afford legal alcohol because of price increases caused by urban development and are therefore forced to indulge themselves on shifty bottles. I received the same warning while in Mexico regarding tequila: buy labeled bottles from reputable distillers only. The major side effect is obviously the chance of death but impure liquor can also cause blindness and liver failure among other health problems. Since this vodka was bootlegged there is no chance that the spirits on our liquor store shelves are toxic but this is an eye-opening story that should warn all about purchasing cheap liquor, especially when traveling, thinking we got a great deal.

Why are people bootlegging? Never will understand that.
