Three New Vodkas: Hot and Not-so-hot

Wednesday January 17, 2007
It has been an interesting few weeks for me as I've had the opportunity to check out some new spirits. It's been fun, enlightening and, in one case, disappointing. Square One is an outstanding new vodka that separates itself from the rest by being the first certified organic rye vodka produced in the United States to date. Not only is Square One free of chemicals, but the company also has a conscience (both environmentally and socially), a nice change of pace from the ordinary. Cheers are also due for ClearHeart Vodka, an apple wine and neutral grain based vodka produced by a small, family-owned distillery in the heart of the Midwest. Cedar Ridge Winery and Distillery also produces an excellent lemoncella and apple brandy. Sadly, these two newbies are only available in select markets.

The brand that did not live up to its hype was Trump Vodka. Yes, that Trump. Donald Trump has expanded once again and put his name on a Dutch vodka that was rather unimpressive. I'm not sure what I expected, but I can say I have had much better vodka. However, I can imagine picking up a bottle for an Apprentice: LA viewing party, mixing up Dirty Martinis until the bottle's gone.
