Muddle That Mint, It's Derby Time!
Wednesday April 25, 2007
The 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs is fast approaching. On May 5th the horses will be at the starting gate, ready to race their hearts out while thousands of spectators enjoy the official drink of the Kentucky Derby, the Mint Julep. The key to a good Mint Julep is to start with good Kentucky bourbon. Two of my favorites are Maker’s Mark and Woodford Reserve, both of which bring their own unique qualities to the julep. Maker’s Mark is slightly more robust than Woodford Reserve, which has a sweeter side. Woodford Reserve is the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby and the company is selling and auctioning a limited number of Julep Cups (all of which are spectacular) for this year’s race. Only 132 24-kt gold-plated cups are available so if you’re a collector of Derby or cocktail memorabilia, this is one opportunity you won’t want to miss. More details can be found at the Woodford Reserve $1,000 Mint Julep Cup website. Now it’s off to the races, Mint Julep in hand of course.
