Tequila and Cinco de Mayo

Tuesday May 1, 2007
The tequila is sure to be flying off the shelves and out of the bottles this Saturday for Cinco de Mayo. Cocktails like the Mexi-tini, Paloma, and Margaritas are perfect for this springtime Mexican celebration. No matter which tequila cocktails you decide to shake up for your fiesta, do yourself a favor and pass up the cheaper bottles and go with a top shelf tequila. Don Eduardo, Voodoo Tiki and Sauza Tres Generaciones have great blancos with a light agave bouquet that is perfect for your fruitier mixed drinks and gentler tequila shots. Check out the reposado tequilas of Corazon, Cabo Wabo and Casa Noble for a Tequini, Envy or other neat cocktails. Of course, if you're the straight sipping type you'll want to look for the anejos, of which I highly recommend Tezon, Patron and (the ever satisfying) Don Julio. For those who "can't do tequila" (a phrase I hear all the time), give it another chance in the spirit of Cinco de Mayo with one of those bottles. I can almost gaurantee you'll be a believer because these are far beyond Cuervo Gold and it's no where near the same as those terrifying tequila experiences of your bygone college days.
