Here's a great reason to enjoy your favorite rum cocktails today: it's National Rum Day! Today is calling for those great tropical drinks that were the foundation of the tiki boom, so start shaking up the Beachcombers, Mai Tais, Scorpions and Zombies. Don't forget other rummy libations like the Bacardi Cocktail, Daiquiri, Pina Colada and Rum Runner. Why stop there at all? Why not make a rumlicious evening out of your Thursday and throw some Rum and Pepper Ham Steaks (from Derrick Riches, About.com Barbecue Guide) on the grill followed by one of Carroll Pellegrinelli's (About.com Dessert Guide) fabulous rum cakes. I'll be going for the Pina Colada Cake, yum!
For a great read on the history of rum, from it's beginnings through the tiki craze, check out Wayne Curtis' book, And a Bottle of Rum: A History of the New World in Ten Cocktails. Curtis has a great story telling style and some of the rum facts he found are really interesting. I gained a whole new appreciation for the spirit by reading that book.

As the 2008 national rum day arrives, do we know where “National Rum Day” originates from? And which nation is celebrating it? I’m thinking of starting an Australian national rum day on a different date so there are more opportunities to enjoy!
