Averna is one of those liqueurs that makes a random appearance in a bar, especially a home bar. Yet, while it is not one of the most popular (or essential) liqueurs in cocktails it is valuable and versatile. Drank in Italy as an after dinner drink, Averna mixes up the dessert cocktails of a spectacular variety. Whiskey is a fair and common companion for the caramel liqueur, as are citrus flavors which simultaneously compliments and contrasts it. For those who have not sipped the sweetness of Averna, I recommend it. It may just become one of your personal bar essentials.
