Margarita Madness

Friday May 23, 2008
Considering that Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, I think it appropriate to start talking about some of our favorite summer cocktails. Today it is the Margarita. This is one of those drinks that has been manipulated into an almost infinite number of ways but the base is usually the same: tequila and triple sec with some sort of sour mixer and fruit. The original cocktail has a lime base but as you can see in my growing collection of Margaritas, everything from tamarind, hibiscus, pomegranate, and even candy are now added to the mix. This is what makes the Margarita fun, it's a versatile drink that can be adapted with almost anything you want to experiment with.

The next question is how do you take your margarita? Some like it neat, some on the rocks and some frozen. I tend to go neat with the traditional lime recipe but some of those more "exotic" variations deserve a little blending. What do you think?
