Champagne Cocktails for New Year's Eve

Sunday December 28, 2008
When we think of drinks for New Year's Eve Champagne is almost always the first thing on the list and for many it may even be the one occasion each year when the bubbly starts flowing. While chilled Champagne is great, there are many sparkling cocktails that are even better. These do take a little more effort than simply popping the cork and pouring, but the end result is worth it and a chance to show off your cocktail skills.

The traditional Champagne Cocktail is a great place to start and that and the Bellini are very easy to make but if you want to get a little more complex (or creative) I have some fantastic new finds for your New Year's Eve countdown party...

  • The Beautiful Boat, Dutch Tulip and Elderflower Cocktail are for those who want a drier drink and they focus on the flavor of herbs rather than the sweetness of fruits to make things a little more interesting.
  • For those who enjoy the sweeter side of life the cachaca-based Raspberry Bellini, the sweet Amore Frizzante, and the aptly named Happy New Year may be more enjoyable.
  • Or, you can always take the easy route, freeing yourself up to enjoy the party (unless you hire a bartender, of course) and put together a Champagne Punch and let everyone help themselves - it's always a favorite.

(1) Doug Winship says:

Don’t forget about the French 75!
.5-1 oz. Gin
.25-.5 oz. Cointreau
.25-.5 oz. Lemon juice
Shake with ice and strain into champers flute.
Fill with good bubbly.
Choose the amount of the first ingredients to taste, but keep the ratio between them.

Yes, that is a great one. It was on one of my lists earlier this week - http://cocktails.about.com/od/atozcocktailrecipes/r/frnch_75_cktl.htm. I’ve found quite a few recipes lately that skip the Cointreau and use syrup. That seems to lose some depth.
