Shamrock Shooters for St. Patrick's Day

Monday March 9, 2009
The St. Patrick's Day parties around the world would not be the same without a few shots. The trend, if you want to stay within the luck o' the Irish spirit, is to go with green and/or Irish whiskey shots and there are quite a few choices...

A favorite is, of course, a straight shot of Irish whiskey. For this I recommend going beyond the bar's well. Check out Bushmills or Tullamore Dew for a smooth shot, Jameson for an inexpensive shot, and if you feel the need to splurge, Michael Collins Single Malt, Jameson 18 year or The Tyrconnell 10 year Single Malt.

Beyond the straight whiskey shot, many an Irish Car Bomb will be ordered on St. Patrick's Day as it is always a favorite for the partier's partier. Yet, there are some lesser known shooters for those who want to join the festivities but not go hardcore. For these people I would have to go with the lighter shooters like the delicious Shamrocked, the Nutty Irishman or the Irish Frog. And, if your bartender has a little time on their hands, you can ask them for a carefully constructed Irish Flag, a round of which makes the table look like very Irish and needs to be saluted with Érin go Bráugh! (Free Ireland).
