The name is very deceiving for this week's Timeless Tipple, but it is a dandy of a drink. The Coffee Cocktail comes from the beginning of cocktail time and it shows it.
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the Coffee Cocktail was named according to its resemblance to a cup of fresh brewed coffee, but that's just a guess. What is for sure is that it is a mix of brandy, ruby port, egg and sugar and that it was first printed by the venerable Jerry Thomas in 1887. Since I first discovered this one it has become a favorite of the brandy cocktails because it is rich and complex without being overdone. If you can take on the egg it's worth it, I have yet to find a substitute worthy.
