The Sweet Honey Taste of Bärenjäger

Sunday June 7, 2009
Bärenjäger is not one of those liqueurs that are essential for a well-stocked bar and I'd wager that 4 out of 10 people have never heard of it but it is a delightful surprise that is worth a taste. This is a sweet honey liqueur produced that has been produced in Germany for over 400 years as a brand, but has roots of a mead-like moonshine dating back even farther.

There are many logical uses for Bärenjäger, most noticeably where you may use honey. It will not be as thick as the lush sweetener but it will add that delicious flavor and can be used to spike your teas as in the Bee Tea, or in the middle of winter I toss it into a Hot Toddy for a sweet spike that is a fantastic pairing for any whiskey. Since we find ourselves in the summer sipping moods right now, drinks like the Pink Honey Martini are first-rate, especially if you enjoy the Cosmos of the world but desire something with a little more depth. And, not to forget the partiers, there is a shooter, the Honey Dew Me, which not only has one of those suggestively fun names shots often don, but is one of those that won't leave you cringing.

As little known as Bärenjäger is, you can see the breadth of it mixability and if you're in the mood for a little adventure it is a lovely liqueur to experiment with. Read the full Bärenjäger Honey Liqueur profile here.
