It seems a little strange for me to pull out a hot cocktail already, but I could not allow a month dedicated to bourbon pass without talking about one of my favorite toddies. Despite the unseasonably warm temperatures this year, it is still September and that slight chill is in the air at night, so the Hot Ginger Toddy is not too far fetched and one of my whiskey picks for it is Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon.
What I enjoy about this spirit-cocktail combination is that the ginger and honey of the toddy pick up and enhance the spiciness of Four Roses without squelching those characteristics. I also like this toddy in the fall because the ginger (Domaine de Canton being the new, optimum source) has that light spice aspect that makes me think of apple pies and cider and long hikes in a forest carpeted with fallen leaves, while the standard Hot Toddy is more fitting for the dark, bleak days of winter when a robust pick me up is what you need.
