Tuesday's Timeless Tipple: Allies Cocktail

Tuesday October 13, 2009

I have come across today's timeless tipple in a few old cocktail books, but it's not one of those that has been completely forgotten because I have also seen it in a couple modern publications. The drink is the Allies Cocktail, a delightful drink honoring the allied powers of World War I.

The Allies is a very simple mix - a 50-50 Martini of London dry gin and French (dry) vermouth with a little Russian kummel acting as a bitter element. Yet, it is also interesting to note that both gin and kummel have Dutch roots and the Dutch stayed neutral through that war despite their trade routes being disrupted and the country's food supply cut short. So, there's a little history to go with a cocktail that you have to try.
