Keeping the Holidays Happy: Drink Smart

Everyone is excited about the holidays. With Christmas at the end of the week and New Year's next week, it is very easy to get caught up in the good feelings of the season and even easier to over indulge on everything from food and drink to shopping.

When it comes to drinking there are some aspects of this season we need to remember to ensure that we keep the holidays happy and safe:

  • Non-alcoholic drinks - There are many options to serve drinks that skip the "spirits" and that the entire family can enjoy. Whether it be a warm and soothing Hot Not Toddy or Hot Spiced Cider, a nog like the Cider Nog, or a bowl filled with a Sparkling Cranberry Punch, there are fantastic options for mocktails that are anything but boring.
  • Avoid the Binge - Because there are many parties, gatherings and opportunities to celebrate that finish off this month, it's important to keep in mind that binge drinking is unhealthy. Just because we are very happy doesn't mean that we need to overdo it and many people forget that this goes for family gatherings as well, because nothing ruins Christmas faster than if people loose their temper in an alcohol-fueled state of mind and a family argument ensues.
  • Alcoholic Family Members - Despite the happy atmosphere, it may be one of the hardest times of the year for some people to deal with feelings of depression and anxiety and signs of alcoholism may become more apparent. If someone in your family needs help there is no better gift that you can give them than some that.
  • Don't Drink and Drive - It should go without saying but it is often a warning that is not heeded. Especially during the holidays, we see too many drunk driving incidents and there are few things that can ruin yours, your family's, and your friend's season than an accident or arrest.
