There are a variety of New Year's resolutions that are made every year and many that are already broken, even though we are just two weeks in. One set of internal promises that are easy to keep are those that pertain to the bar. These are some of the most basic bartending practices that can keep you and your guests happy and improve your drink making skills. It's never too late to turn these theories into reality either - who needs an occasion like the New Year to make improvements - and each little thing you do can make a world of difference.

Check out these tips for improving your bar skills...

  • 5 Steps to Better Cocktails - This is the most basic list of things you can do to improve every single drink you make. The most important one that is often forgotten is "Match the Drink and Glass Temperature," as this should be the first step in preparing any drink. Especially this time of year when many of us are trying to warm up with hot cocktails, it is important to remember to warm up the glass or mug by filling it with warm water while you go about the rest of the preparation - it will keep your hot drink hot longer.
  • The Importance of Ice - Ice is the essential ingredient in the bar. Think about it, it is the one thing you use in almost every drink you make and should be given the attention that such an important element deserves.

  • Essential Bar Tools - If you feel like your bar has been lacking the tools needed to create a few of those drinks you have been salivating over trying at home, now may be a good time to check the gadgets you have on hand against those that are essential to a well-stocked bar.
  • Essential Spirits & Mixers to Stock in a Bar - One of the worst feelings is having a craving for a certain drink, something that is as simple as a Manhattan or a Gin & Tonic, and you find out that you have no sweet vermouth or tonic water. Your options are to either stomp off to the liquor store or come up with another idea that may not be as satisfying to your momentary taste. This is why a well-stocked bar is essential, especially if you are entertaining, even casually or on the spur-of-the-moment.
  • When to Shake and When to Stir - Oh, the age-old question...Do you know the answer? If not you need to read this article and try to put it into practice. Your cocktails will thank you in the end.
