As far as advice behind today's real-world bar goes there are few who can outshine the likes of H. Joseph Ehrmann. Recently awarded the title of Bartender of the Year by Nightclub and Bar, Ehrmann is one of the mixologists at the forefront of today's mixology movement, yet he does not forget the influential barmen who preceded him.

I recently had the pleasure of talking with Ehrmann about the history of his saloon Elixir in San Fransisco and his theory on modern mixology. What I found most interesting is, despite his bartending fame, Ehrmann has a profound realization that in order to further the appreciation of bartending as a craft we must learn from the old-school bartenders. This feeling, especially regarding the San Fransisco area, is something that Ehrmann is adamant about to the extent that he and his colleagues have formed The Barbary Coast Conservatory for the American Cocktail and the annual San Fransisco Cocktail Week.
When talking to Ehrmann in a recent interview I learned of his culinary cocktail style and the impact of modern mixology. Filled with advice for aspiring bartenders, the history of west coast cocktails, and its influence on the future, you may read the full interview with H. Joseph Ehrmann here.
