Imagine the scenario: You are presented with some of the best brands of liquor, each of which will be mixed into the iconic cocktails of all time and it is your job to find the best mixed drink of the lot. That is what the Ultimate Cocktail Challenge is all about and in its inaugural year the results are not too surprising, but interesting.
This is a new competition style that I think is more helpful to the consumer because it is not simply telling you which spirit is better, but which is best in a specific application, which is what we're all about in the cocktail world - what mixes best in a certain cocktail. If you've been finding your Daiquiris lacking balance, or your Vodka Martinis missing that undefinable "something" then this may be a list you want to check out.
What did I find interesting?
- Chopin makes the best Cosmo - with Sex and the City 2 coming out this is sure to be a hot topic for awhile.
- Banks 5 Island makes the best Daiquiri - a rum that is now on my radar.
- Remy Martin and Martell take the cake for brandy cocktails, while The Macallan and Highland Park seem to be great Scotches for mixing - something I've often recommended.
- Rye whiskey is one of the best classic whiskey cocktail mixers.
- Tanqueray continues to dominate the gin cocktail.
