The inaugural cocktail contest was a great success and we had some amazing tequila cocktails submitted. There can only be one winner and this month we chose Ryan Kelley's Pom Padre.
This drink is an interesting mix that caught my eye first because of the key ingredient, and it was the one that Kelley challenged himself to pair with tequila. That is Benedictine and if you are familiar with the herbal liqueur you would think the same thing: That would actually work? It does and the balance here is key in order to avoid losing either the tequila or the Benedictine to the fruit juices. The fascinating tastes of fruit, herb, and agave are a joy to sip and savor.
Congratulations, Ryan! You created a great drink and I thank you for sharing it with us.
You can find Kelley's Pom Padre cocktail here and learn more about his inspiration and tips. You can also find him elsewhere online at both Tequila Examiner and at his newest venture, TequilaAficionado.com, where he is the Senior Editor.
I also want to give a special mention to the other two top contenders in this cocktail contest: Mango Salsa Margarita and Dirty Daisy. Each of us on the panel (Lance Mayhew, Chris Milligan, and myself) thought that these three cocktails were interesting and excellent uses of tequila that span an intriguing spectrum of flavors.
