A Caramel Latte and Espresso Martini

By November 5, 2012

Coffee, coffee, coffee. Oh, how we love coffee! While many of us rely on it as a morning or afternoon pick me up, it is also wonderful in a mixed drink. Of course, there are the old, reliable hot coffee drinks that span most every spirit and flavor including the iconic Irish Coffee, but what about chilling that coffee down for a cool, equally amped up cocktail? I have two favorites in this category: Bacchus Espresso Martini and Van Gogh Caramel Latte.

Espresso Martini

I fell for the Espresso Martini at the Bacchus Restaurant in St. Croix while visiting the Cruzan Rum distillery and it remains a  favorite to this day. The primary reason this cocktail has made my top picks list is that it is beyond easy with just three ingredients. Despite its simplicity, this one packs a punch when it comes to flavor and this is mostly due to the vanilla rum (Cruzan, of course) base, which is a nice shake up from the transparent vodkas that are often used in this flavored martini. Mix that rum with Kahlua and a strong coffee and you have a great drink. Get the recipe...

The Caramel Latte is the other favorite. The recipe calls for it to be served as a highball (tall, over ice), but I really enjoy this one shaken and served straight up. It is comprised of the delectable Van Gogh Dutch Caramel Vodka, coffee liqueur, chilled espresso, and half & half, and, yes, it is as good as it sounds and (again) super easy to make. Either of these are perfect choices for after dinner drinks, pairing perfectly with most any dessert you could think of. Also, these cocktails bring up a cardinal rule I have in coffee cocktails... the stronger the coffee, the better the cocktail. Your average drip coffee machine with the average bean will not these drinks justice. Instead, get out the espresso machine or the French press and use a quality dark roast bean to get the darkest, most flavorful coffee for mixing. Save the drip coffee for those sleepy-eyed mornings when pushing a button is pushes the extent of your motor skills.
