This is the classic recipe for a Saratoga Cocktail, not the pineapple and maraschino with brandy version which is considerably more modern. It comes from the 1880's and is essentially a Manhattan with half the whiskey replaced with brandy (Cognac is preferred by many). The Saratoga is a fantastic change of pace and deserves the best whiskey and brandy you can mix with. Rye whiskey is also a preferred choice and this is convenient considering the variety of brands that are making a comeback, though a premium bourbon will also fit the bill.
