The Algonquin Cocktail is a great whiskey "martini" with a little tropical flare. It features rye whiskey, which has, thankfully, come back into fashion and we now have a number of great brands to choose from. Whistle Pig, Templeton Rye, Redemption, and Knob Creek Rye are all ones that I would recommend for this cocktail.

The cocktail was named after the famous Algonquin Hotel in New York City although when exactly it was created is unclear. The hotel, built in 1902, was known as a "dry" hotel well before Prohibition. Whether it was before or after the '30s is up for debate and it really doesn't matter, because this is one of the great classic cocktails.

Ingredients:

Preparation:

  1. Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
  2. Shake well.
  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

when i tried making this myself, i found that it actually tastes a little better as it warms up (imo). try it yourself and i think you will see what i mean. when it's too cold, and you can't really taste the pineapple as much, because the whiskey dominates. cheers!
