The Apple Cider Shandy is one of my favorite ways to drink those really heavy, dark beers that are everywhere. I've experimented with many styles of beer, but it wasn't until I asked Bryce Eddings, About.com Beer Guide, for suggestions that I learned that the best option is an oatmeal stout. The sparkling apple cider opens it up wonderfully, adding some air and lightness and the oatmeal and apple flavors are amazing together.
As far as choosing the cider, I like to go with a soft (non-alcoholic) sparkling cider because the flavor of the hard ciders is too bold when combining it with beer.
