The bed of roses cocktail shows the softer side of Jägermeister. It is an unusual recipe for the liqueur which has become famous (or infamous) for party drinks like the Jäger bomb, but it's a very lovely cocktail that you won't want to miss.

This recipe is actually a bit like a Jägermeister sour. You'll notice that the lemon juice alone outweighs the liqueur. With the lime juice added, it becomes a citrus-forward drink. This works surprisingly well because the juices add a refreshing tartness against Jäger's herbal bouquet, and it all comes into balance with the fruity sweetness of grenadine. One taste will prove that Jäger really does have a place in high-end cocktails.

Tips

  • Fresh citrus juices are going to improve this cocktail greatly. You can actually make it very easy by squeezing one whole lemon and one whole lime directly into the shaker. Both fruits tend to yield the perfect amount of juice the recipe calls for.
  • If you really want to step up your game, try the drink with homemade grenadine. It is very easy to make because it's essentially a simple syrup made with pomegranate juice rather than water. You can even use the fresh fruit when it's in season (typically late fall and early winter).
  • Toss that jar of neon red maraschinos and replace it with real maraschino cherries instead. Brands like Luxardo make great cherries for garnishing, and they're not bleached and dyed like the bright red ones. You can also look for "cocktail" cherries from many companies or make your own maraschinos when cherries are in season.

Recipe Variations

  • Like all sour drinks, adjust the sweet and sour ingredients to suit your personal taste. You might find that pouring equal parts of Jäger and lemon is a better mix or that you prefer just a hint of grenadine.
  • Jägermeister uses a proprietary recipe of herbs and botanicals to get the flavor, but there are a couple of liqueurs that are similar that you could use as a substitute in this recipe. Underberg is another German liqueur that's very similar, and Ramazzotti Amaro is a recommended digestif as well.

Not only will the bed of roses prove that Jäger can be enjoyed with delicate, fresh flavors, but it's also a surprisingly low-proof cocktail. Since the 70-proof liqueur is the only alcohol, it shakes up to just 9 percent ABV (18 proof). That makes this martini-style drink lighter than the majority of wine.
