Emerson Cocktail

Emerson Cocktail

The Emerson is a classic martini cocktail that is often overlooked. It adds a touch of sweetness to the drier Gin Martini and is a nice change of pace.

Though a bit more obscure, the Emerson is actually quite easy to remember if you associate it with two of the better known gin classics. The Martinez is disputably the predecessor to the Gin Martini and can be thought of as a 'sweet gin martini.' Take the Martinez combination of gin, sweet vermouth, and maraschino and add lemon juice to create an Emerson. There are a few more tweaks to the ratio, but you will at least remember the ingredients.

As one reviewer said, this cocktail can also be likened to the Aviation Cocktail and you may enjoy it with a dash or two of bitters.

A Twist on the Martini or Aviation?, Member stanmsak

I was drawn to this by the use of the maraschino as well as the gin. Rather than a twist on a martini though, I'd say its a twist on the Aviation, adding the sweet vermouth to the ingredients for that classic. This was very smooth - I used Bombay and Luxardo. After a couple of sips I put back into the shaker and added a heavy dash of Angosturo. That really made this cocktail pop!
