The sundowner is an elegant mocktail with a fabulous flavor. It combines white grape juice and sparkling water to create a sort of nonalcoholic replica of sparkling wine. You also get to enjoy the cooling flavor of mint as the garnish slowly infuses its flavor into the drink.

This is a very refreshing drink that is perfect for brunch, baby showers, or anytime you want to serve a nonalcoholic drink with a little style. Everyone will love it and you'll be delighted with how incredibly easy it is to make.

Tips

  • White grape juice is not as common as the dark purple variety, though it is around. Look carefully for it in the juice aisle of your local grocery store. It's not "white," however, but more of a light brown that's similar to apple juice.
  • Any sparkling water will work for this drink, whether it's seltzer, mineral water, or even club soda. Flavored sparkling waters are an option as well. To sweeten the mix slightly, you can pour a lightly colored and flavored soda such as ginger ale or lemon-lime soda. For a slightly drier drink, pour tonic water.
  • To wake up the flavor and aroma of your mint, slap the sprig between the palm of your hands before adding it to the drink. You can also tear the leaves and stir them in or muddle the leaves with a splash of the grape juice.
  • Skip the ice if you like or replace some or all of it with frozen grapes. They will keep your drink nice and cold and you won't have to worry about your drink becoming diluted with melted water before you finish it.

Recipe Variations

  • This recipe is easy to transform into a pitcher-sized drink, which makes serving it even easier. Simply fill the pitcher with ice, pour the white grape juice until the pitcher's about two-thirds full, then fill it with sparkling water and add your mint. Stir and it's ready to serve.
  • A non-alcoholic sparkling cider is also a great alternative for this drink. Adding the sparkling water to that will make it even more effervescent, which is a great idea because some ciders can be lacking in the bubble department.
  • For a fruitier spin, skip the grape juice and turn to another juice with a light flavor and color. Some of the fruit blends, such as a white peach-cranberry juice, make an excellent substitute. You can also pour one of these along with the grape juice for a fun flavor twist.
  • Mint isn't the only herb you can use. When mixing up a sundowner in spring or summer, try a sprig of rosemary or lavender instead. Sage would be an excellent herb for winter occasions and, in autumn, a cinnamon stick is a nice addition.
