Sweet and sour mix is a commonly used mixer made of sugar and lemon and/or lime juices.
Pre-mixed sour mix can be found almost anywhere spirits are sold, though these are often too sweet and too sour, made of thick, unnatural sweeteners. For this reason, you will find that a housemade sour mix makes better cocktails and actually ends up costing less. Use the recipe below to mix a batch of sour mix to store in the bar and use whenever needed.
To make sweet and sour mix:
Combine 1 cup sugar with 1 cup water until sugar is completely dissolved. Add 1 cup fresh lime juice and 1 cup fresh lemon juice and refrigerate.
Tip: Once you have a sour mix made up you can use it in cocktails that call for simple syrup and either lemon or lime juices individually. If you do so you may have to use more or less to obtain a balanced cocktail.
