From what I have seen, there were more "Millennium Cocktails" created at the turn of the recent cycle than most any other drink and each of them is almost completely different from any other. This one just happens to have a gin base.
In The Joy of Mixology Gary Regan has a bourbon and peach version with suggestions for quickly turning it into either a sour and a collins. You'll find also find Dale DeGroff's Courvoisier Cognac, pineapple, and curacao "Millennium" in Craft of the Cocktail. The list goes on and on and all are great for celebrating New Year's, even if it isn't the "big" one.
