In reality, the Soda Cocktail has probably been lost to time because of all of the commercial sodas that are now available. However, in Jerry Thomas' day you had to make your own sodas and this one is the most basic. Also, in contrast to today's drinking customs, in the 1887 revision of his Bartenders Guide Thomas is adamant that "small lumps of ice...should always be removed from the glass before serving to the customer." However, I think we will all agree that this soda mocktail would be much better with the ice. This classic drink is best with fresh soda from a siphon. The lemon garnish is my preference.
Ingredients:
- soda water
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 tsp powdered sugar
- Lemon wedge for garnish
Preparation:
- Pour the bitters and sugar into a highball glass filled with ice.
- Fill with soda and stir thoroughly.
- Garnish with a lemon wedge.
