Who doesn't love a cocktail with a little flair in the presentation? Well, the goblet of fire certainly has it. This one was created for the adults who enjoy the "Harry Potter" series and it puts a magical twist on a tasty cocktail with a little fire and some fun sparks.

Aside from its famous inspiration, this really is a delicious and fun cocktail. It was created for Ty Ku Liqueur, which is paired with Kahlua. That combination of sweet fruit and coffee is a delight and when you add a touch of cream it gets even better.

The drink is finished off with overproof rum (e.g., Cruzan 151), which is key to producing the flame (lower proof rums will not burn as easily). As with all flaming cocktails, take caution: extinguish the flame properly and don't allow anyone who's had one too many near the lit glass. Be careful, put on a magic show for your guests, and enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces Ty Ku Liqueur

  • 1 ounce coffee liqueur

  • 1 teaspoon cream

  • 1 ounce 151-proof rum

  • 1 dash grated cinnamon

Steps to Make It

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. In a cocktail shaker, pour the two liqueurs.

  3. Fill with ice and shake well.

  4. Strain into a wine goblet or cocktail glass.

  5. Float the cream on top by pouring it slowly over the back of a bar spoon.

  6. Float the rum on top of the cream using the same technique.

  7. Light the rum with a match. As the flame burns, sprinkle some grated cinnamon onto the flame (it should spark a little).

  8. Clap your hands over the flame to put it out (double-check that it's extinguished) and give the drink a quick stir. Serve and enjoy.

Tips

  • Pour this drink into thick glassware so the heat of the flame doesn't crack the glass. Don't let it burn long, either. Even the thickest glass won't stand up to prolonged heat.
  • Always extinguish a flaming cocktail before drinking it!
  • If you're going to clap to put out the flame, be sure to roll back your sleeves. Blowing it out? Keep a safe distance when doing so and hold your hair back.
  • The actual amount of cream needed will depend on the diameter of your glass. The goal is to create a thin white layer over top of the entire drink.
  • Both the cream and the rum should want to float naturally on top of the other ingredients because of their specific gravity. It's pretty easy, even if you've never layered a cocktail before. A little practice can help, though.

Recipe Variation

Instead of Ty Ku, you can pour any base liquor you like. Orange liqueurs (e.g., triple sec) will have a similar profile, though you could also go with citrus vodka. Neither of these options will add Ty Ku's green color, but that doesn't matter much because the coffee liqueur's so dark.

How Strong Is a Goblet of Fire?

Not only is this a pretty cool drink that tastes good, but it's also a very potent brew. With that full ounce of 151-rum, its alcohol content will be 28 percent ABV (56 proof). It's about the same strength as a mixed tequila shooter.
