The Bottom Line

As a spirit on the rise in most of the world, cachaça has long been a prized possession of Brazil. Unlike its counterparts in the rum world, cachaça is produced by fermenting sugar cane rather than molasses. This fresher spirit has a distinct flavor and is often produced in a cheap, unrefined manner. To be succinct, good cachaça is hard to find. Leblon Cachaça is one of the good ones, in fact it's one of the best and represents its class of spirit perfectly. Leblon is as luxurious as the beach in Rio de Janiero it was named after.

  • Smooth, clean cachaça unlike most white cachaças available.
  • Creates outstanding, complex Caipirinhas.

Guide Review - Leblon Cachaça

Leblon Cachaça is made with the best parts of fresh sugar cane after its first pressing. The fermentation and distillation process is differs from that used by other brands by using a specially designed set of temperatures, times and the perfect yeast, which sets the stage for a well-balanced spirit. After distillation, the distillate is moved from Brazil to the south of France where Leblon is aged (between 30 days and 3 months) in used Cognac casks. This light aging adds smoothness to the usually rough liquor without turning it oaky like gold cachaças, which are aged longer and preferred for sipping. The entire process developed for Leblon Cachaça is designed to give the spirit a notable "fruit forward" tone that is light and pure and perfect for mixing into cocktails.

A spectrum of popular cocktails can be transformed with a twist of Brazilian flavor by substituting Leblon Cachaça for the typical base spirit: for the tequila in a Margarita, the vodka of a Cosmopolitan and the rum of Daiquiris, Mojitos and Rum & Cokes. However, one drink, the Caipirinha, begs for the premium taste of Leblon. As the national drink of Brazil the Caipirinha displays the country's spirit perfectly and is always the test of a good cachaça: the one made with the smooth Leblon was perfect. Other variations of the Caipirinha such as the Caipirini, Kumquat-Ginger Caipirinha and Raspberry Caipirinha are just as refreshing as the original.

Tasting notes:
Leblon traps a tequila-like nose with transparent fruity and herbal notes and undertones of vanilla. The full-bodied palate is smooth with complex layers of citrus, vanilla, pepper and the most subtle oak. For such a lively spirit, the warm, velvety finish is a lasting surprise.
