Guide Review - Shango Rum Liqueur
The Name:
Shango (Sango, Xango, Changó or Jakuta) was the name of the Yoruba god of passion, power, thunder and male virility who was worshiped by the African tribe for hundreds of years. Over time the gods and their followers were moved to the Caribbean and were adopted into the beliefs of what is now Santeria, which is practiced primarily in Cuba and Trinidad. It was these characteristics of desire and vitality that fit perfectly with the spirit's herbal infusions and inspired the name.
The Rum:
Shango is not rum, but a liqueur. This is because it is made with 100% sugar cane spirits, as opposed to the 51% required for rum, producing a spirit that is much sweeter and smoother than many of the rums you're used to. Shango is produced in Trinidad and features well-known South American herbs, damiana and guarana. The two combine with each other to create a passion potion of sorts, and while they are not recognizable in the liqueur's flavor their effects can be felt shortly after drinking. To add even more sweetness to the delectable liqueur, the essences of vanilla and coconut are also infused within and contribute to the undertones with a tropical fantasy-like feel.
Tasting Notes:
Shango does not hide its sultry sweetness anywhere, instead it flaunts it. The aroma of chocolate, coconut and caramel burst out of the liqueur with an intoxicating jolt. The palate is warm and silky with scrumptiously addicting vanilla and sugar that is closely followed by an enduring, lush, "wake me up" finish courtesy of the guarana.
Enjoy Shango:
- Chilled, served on the rocks
- Cuba Libre
- El Presidente
- Mojito
- Drizzled over fudge ripple ice cream
