In two days I was able to visit five of the distilleries producing premium tequilas in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. This region is the home of tequila as we know it today and includes the town of Tequila and the highlands known as Los Altos. The distilleries I toured produce some of the best tequilas available including Sauza, Jose Cuervo, Cazadores and Corzo, Corazón and Tezón. The premium tequilas produced by these distilleries and countless others are impacting spirit drinkers worldwide as more people gain an appreciation of hand-crafted spirits and the mixability of tequila.
Each distillery stands out from the others in their own way, yet all have the knack for producing fine tequilas. Many of the tequilleros use traditional techniques but have found interesting ways to incorporate them into the modern world. Despite all of the technology and quality standards, the passion of the original tequilleros has not been lost on these modern distillers.
