Guide Review - Zygo Vodka
The innovative creators of Zygo, Ron Zier and Ken Wyatt, have found the perfect blend of naturally occurring caffeine sources and fresh flavors. The energy aspect of Zygo is due to a combination of Taurine, Guarana, Yerba Matte and D-Ribose and the resulting buzz is refreshingly powerful and uplifting unlike other liquors that have more of a downer effect. A mid-afternoon shot of Zygo on the rocks keeps the need for an afternoon siesta at bay and a night of heavy partying is prolonged when choosing Zygo-based cocktails. I do have to caution that the caffeine can mask the level of intoxication and even though one may feel awake or sober enough they shouldn't drive.
So with all this attention on the energy aspect of Zygo, how does it taste? It's surprisingly outstanding. My initial preconceptions that the taste wouldn't be spectacular were dashed with the first sip. The initial flavor of woody fruit is pleasing and the peach and juniper really stand out. All the flavor guns come out in the finish where orange and vanilla show their colors along with the others for a strong, lasting burst of sweet goodness with a lovely burn that wakes the senses.
The Zygo website features a few wonderful cocktails and I must recommend the Melancia (Zygo, sake and lime juice), Jade Blossom (Zygo, green tea liqueur, and sauvignon blanc garnished with an edible orchid) and Le Peche (Zygo, peach puree, pineapple and lime juices).
