Guide Review - Maran Illustrated Bartending

Maran Illustrated Bartending is a well thought out beginner's guide to bartending that is perfect for those who are starting their journey into the world of cocktails. All of the basic recipes (Martini, Cosmopolitan, Mojito, etc.) and some variations are included with step-by-step directions detailing exactly how to make each drink and are accompanied by a crisp, full-color photograph (a handy tool for those who learn better with visual aids). Groups of recipes are organized by theme making it very easy to compare similar cocktails; for instance, Martinis are broken down into categories like Classic Martinis, Cosmopolitans, Sour Martinis, Fruity Martinis and Cake & Pie Martinis. An impressive list of coffee drinks and mocktails finish the recipe index with a bang and helpful hints about related ingredients and drinks are found on each page leaving you with tidbits of cocktail knowledge. Although each grouping contains only 4-12 recipes, the beginner can gain a better understanding of the different classes of cocktails and use this knowledge as a primer for further research and experimentation.

Everything from bar spoons to garnishes and shaking to layering is covered in the first 45 pages with at least one photograph per topic, making it very easy to know exactly what you're reading about. This abundance of photography also adds to the pleasant design and layout that ultimately builds a navigable, fast scanning reference and a rather enjoyable read.
