Bitters are enjoying a renaissance of sorts in the cocktail world right now. For many years, Angostura bitters were the only brand of bitters left on the market, but in recent years, there has been an explosion of brands. Essentially, bitters are an alcohol base flavored with herbs, spices, and perhaps some citrus. Just a few drops in a whiskey cocktail can make the difference between an average cocktail and a great one. Here are 5 great bitters that you can use at home to improve your cocktail making skills.
1. Angostura Bitters
While Angostura bitters is in short supply in some areas right now, the company promises that supplies will be back to normal shortly. Essentially the king of bitters for its longevity, Angostura would have been the only brand of bitters stocked in most bars 20 years ago. Essential in a Manhattan cocktail, these bitters have a pronounced tamarind and cinnamon flavor.
2. Regan's Orange Bitters
Created by cocktail guru Gary Regan, these orange bitters have a pronounced cardamom undertone. These bitters work well in just about any cocktail, my personal favorite is to add a few dashes of Regan's Orange to a Bronx cocktail.
3. Peychaud's Bitters
Essential for making a Sazerac cocktail, Peychaud's offers up light Christmas spice notes.
4. The Bitter Truth Bittermens Grapefruit Bitters
Grapefruit and hops combine to make this a heady, complex bitters. Try using this with drinks containing rye whiskey.
5. Scrappy's Chocolate Bitters
Made with oragnic cacao nibs, Scrappy's Chocolate bitters can add a complex dimension to many cocktails. A Manhattan cocktail takes on a completely different flavor profile with Scrappy's chocolate bitters, and an Old Fashioned made with a nice sweet bourbon like Four Roses is heavenly. Look for cocktails containing whiskey and green chartreuse to feature this in as well.
