If you like a Manhattan, enjoy it with bourbon and dry vermouth (technically a Rosemary Cocktail) but are looking for a touch of something special, the Brown University is it. This is one of those lost in time cocktails that I found in Just Cocktails, a bartending guide published in 1939, that is simply a personalization of a common drink that many of us make anyway without knowing that at one time, at least, it did have a real name. So now you (like I) know the true name and can stump your friends by saying, "Make mine a Brown University." Imagine the blank looks you will get on that one.
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 oz bourbon whiskey
- 1 1/2 oz dry vermouth
- 2 dashes orange bitters
Preparation:
- Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
- Stir well.
- Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
