Talk about a high-class, complex drink, The Beatnik (created by mixologist Duggan McDonnell) hits the target perfectly. To have the best Beatnik possible choose a premium small batch bourbon like Basil Hayden's, Maker's Mark or Booker's and compliment it with a port of equal quality. In the end this simple up drink is an ideal blend of sweet and bitter, with each of the individual ingredients contributing to both aspects in their own way.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 oz tawny port
  • 1 1/2 oz Averna liqueur
  • 1 oz small batch bourbon whiskey
  • flamed orange peel for garnish

Preparation:

  1. Rinse a cocktail glass with port and pour into a cocktail shaker with the remaining ingredients.
  2. Stir 30 times over ice.
  3. Strain into a cocktail glass.
  4. Garnish with a flamed orange peel.
