The Compass Box Whisky Company is new in the old-world of Scotch but they are certainly making an impact in boutique whisky. The company was founded in 2000 by John Glaser and in that short period of time he has explored the full range of Scotch, from the rich grains to the peatiest of malts. While the standard bottlings of Compass Box are all impressive but it is the reserves that push the limits of Scotch as you may know it, sadly many of these are very limited releases.

Hedonism

Hedonism is a 100% grain whisky, a rarity among Scotch anymore. When the vatted grain is paired with some time in American oak casks the result is a luscious Scotch with notes of vanilla, toffee and coconut. The individual whiskies are aged between 12 and 23 years and come from some of the best distilleries including Cambus, Caledonian and Cameron Bridge. To explore the realm of Scotch is to examine all aspects and this grain base is absolutely stunning and available at an excellent price.
  • 43% alc/volume (86 proof)
  • Vatted Grain Scotch
  • Retails for around $80/750ml bottle
  • Released in 2000

Hedonism Maximus

Take a step into a richer and deeper Hedonism in the limited edition Hedonism Maximus. This blend of a 42 year old Invergordon whisky and a 29 year old from Scotland's oldest continuously operating distillery, Cameron Bridge, is the shining light of Compass Box's portfolio and is simply a stunning Scotch. This extra-old version of the popular Hedonism has all of the same aspects, but in an intensified form, with notes of caramel, burnt toffee, vanilla and coconut making an appearance. Unfortunately for Scotch lovers, this beauty is an extremely limited release with just 1500 bottles available and only 600 of those will reach the United States.
  • 46% alc/volume (92 proof)
  • Vatted Grain Scotch
  • Retails for around $300/750 ml bottle
  • Released in October 2008

The Peat Monster

The name of this Compass Box Scotch says quite a bit about its profile. If you're a lover of full-flavored peat against a robust malt background then The Peat Monster is highly recommended. Every aspect of this bottling is earthy, heavy on the peat and just smoky enough to give the whisky a lovely balance. The blend includes whiskies aged anywhere from 10-15 years in first refill casks from the Caol Ila and Ardmore distilleries. The Peat Monster is anything but scary, unless you prefer the sweeter side of whisky, and is an acquired taste but an adventurous one.
  • 46% alc/volume (92 proof)
  • Vatted Malt Scotch
  • Retails for around $45/750 ml bottle
  • Released in 2003

The Peat Monster Reserve Edition

First impressions of this limited edition of The Peat Monster are anything but subtle. In fact this one makes you stop, take in the smoky aroma and enjoy every earthy sip. The best description is simply, "Holy Peat!" The Peat Monster Reserve will clearly show you the profile of peat and after tasting this you'll be able to recognize it in any other Scotch after. The drawback to this bottling is that it is a limited edition (2000 bottles for the U.S.) and only available in magnums, however "The Union of Earth and Water" is worth seeking while it is available. To get this super-peaty Scotch a blend of Islay single malts from famous distilleries, a peated Speyside single malt and just 2% of a northern Highland malt from French oak are combined. The Peat Monster Reserve is spectacular, uplifting and a whisky you'll be talking about for years...hopefully it is released again.
  • 48.9% alc/volume (97.8 proof)
  • Vatted Malt Scotch
  • Retails for around $175/1.75 liter bottle
  • Released in October 2008
